Training

The State and University Library Bremen (SuUB) is the city's largest and oldest academic library, and regularly offers training and internship placements within the library and the bookbindery.

Training

Specialist for Media and Information Services (FAMI) - Library Services

FAMIs are specialists for the development and management of library holdings, and work with library users to identify and retrieve holdings and information. FAMIs are also responsible for a variety of administrative tasks.

The FAMI training program is three years in duration. Practical training is carried out at the SuUB, while the theoretical training is conducted on a part-time basis at the Utbremen Education Centre. In-school training and internships at other institutions provide trainees with an overview of the various specialist departments. Candidates for the FAMI program will require:

  • A natural affinity for order and organization
  • A meticulous and systematic work ethic
  • Good grades in German and mathematics
  • Basic computer skills
  • Teamwork skills
  • A desire to work with books and other media, and a service-oriented personality

Bookbinder

The bookbindery at the SuUB is a specialist workshop for the repair and restoration of damaged or aging books with a strong focus on delivering the highest standards of craftsmanship. The bookbindery is also responsible for preserving and repairing books damaging by frequent use.

The training program at the bookbindery is three years in duration and concludes with a final examination. Practical training is provided at the SuUB bookbindery, with further training taking place at Wilhelm Wagenfeld School. More information is available here.

  • Spatial sense
  • Sound technical skills and a sense of craftsmanship
  • Good grades in German and mathematics
  • A strong interest in design and the ability to concentrate

Internships

The State and University Library offers a range of internships.

Our specially tailored internships for school pupils provide schoolgoers with an overview of the work of bookbinders and specialists for media and information services at academic libraries.

Students of Library and Information Sciences (Bachelor / Masters) complete a comprehensive internship at the library during their studies, gaining hands-on experience in their chosen profession and an overview of the library's various departments.

Placements are limited in order to provide interns with the best possible experience. Regretfully this means that we are unable to accept all of the applications made to our office.
